DIVA-for-Rhino Software Training: Computer Daylighting Analysis

When: December 8, Thursday, 9 am - 4 pm
Where: Pacific Energy Center, San Francisco

DIVA-for-Rhino is a daylighting and energy modeling tool made for designers. It was conceived as a way to give designers access to high quality, accurate simulation tools in an accessible modeling environment.

This class will use example models to teach how to properly set up models, run simulations, and interpret results. While most of the class will focus on the version of DIVA used in Rhino, at the end of the class DIVA-for-Grasshopper will be briefly introduced.

The class will be taught by Kera Lagios of the Integral Group.

To attend, you should be familiar with Rhino or a similar 3D modeling program, and have some understanding of daylighting metrics such as illuminance, luminance, glare and and climate based metrics (Daylight Autonomy, sDA/ASE, UDI, CDA, etc.). Basic skills in Rhino, Grasshopper, and daylighting metrics use will not be covered.

Surface shape error

@Gerard wrote:

My client milled a large object (yacht deck) with their 5-axis machine to find out that one surface has an unpredictable shape. When they imported the surface it was correct as I have the original design file over here.
We will probably never know what happened in between, but what is wrong with this surface?

As you maybe can see, there's an unexpected ledge at the top edge which is weird when I look at the control point distribution. After _ShrinkTrimmedSrf, the shape is correct again.

I'd like to know what is happening here.

Thank you in advance for taking a look.

UnrollSrf request

@2DCube wrote:

UnrollSrf is a very handy command but the labelled edges only serve as an on-screen legend and don't really help with output for production, unless you put in a lot of legwork.

I'm working with a fabricator who wants sheet metal water jet cut and welded in a particular configuration.

He works with .dxf so the dots aren't much use, especially when converting them to text.
When choosing different ConvertDots options for alignment it returns the same output?

Would it be possible to add in an option to rotate the text so that it is perpendicular to an edge and then select the offset similar to this:

(I see I've rotated the number 1 the wrong way round in this example... Or the right way around)

[BUG, Rhino 6 WIP] Edit functionality in BlendSrf inaccessible after using ChainEdges functionality

@Stroopwafelandcoffee wrote:

In Rhino 6 WIP, BlendSrf has the option to Edit blended surfaces that were made with history enabled. However, if you use the ChainEdges functionality for a surface blend once, it will always automatically return to the ChainEdges submenu when calling BlendSrf the next time. Because this happens, I am unable to use the Edit functionality anymore. The only way to fix this is by restarting Rhino (it then forgets the ChainEdges choice and again gives you the choice between ChainEdges and Edit).

Create layers from material names

I have bought an obj model of a car, just to painfully discover that all meshes are on the same layer with about 30 different materials applied to them, hence my question:

Should it be possible by script (I can do some python) to select an object, take its material name, create a layer with that name and move the object to that layer?

Microsoft Surface Studio

Shaded View also rendered, show just edges, not edges of fillets etc...how?

Hi.
If I turn on for Shadow mode, show edges and use 1, I see edges of surfaces I dont want to see such as edges of fillets.
I want just sharp edges showing up, not even the connecting line from edge of hole on outside of a 2mm thick wall to the edge of same hole on inside face of that wall.
Just wish to 'enhance' the viewing of edges.
In shadow mode and also rendered mode.

What setting does this ?

Any ArtCam users?

@VisualConduct wrote:

Hello all,

I am slowly reading myself into CNC milling and one of the things I'm interessted in is to use greyscale images for relief milling. I looked at ArtCam and it looks pretty usefull to me, on the other hand there is allready quite some software that I'm using, besides the money it also takes time to master. I am just wondering if I can get the same quality in Rhino as in ArtCam in a reasonable amount of time. Another option would be for me to do this in 3dCoat or Cinema4D, just looking at the different options.

Curious to hear your thoughts about this.

Many thanks, Robert

I've read several times on the user forums that have problems with the zoom, in particular they can not be zoomed beyond a certain level and then the model seems to hang. I learned a few days ago a little trick to be able to make a more extended zoom and prevent it from seizing up.

Where are there videos for Rhino that can be sized on screen so as to work along to ?

Rendering skylight has no options and burns out scene and sun has little choice

@Steve1 wrote:

Hi,
exploring Rendering and turn on sun, find that the sun by default is in my face, would prefer it over my shoulder.

alter to North East and North as 7.5deg and altitude 25deg.
The far side of my model is in darkness yet in reality it would be lit by the sky.

The video I am following which I can fit to lower half screen with rhino upper half,

has a calendar which I dont see.

I turn on skylight and the entire model is burnt out, there are no controls for skylight, its on or off. The shadows , whats left of them, are very granular as if sprinkled black sand, and no longer grey with soft edges. I see his does this and he applies colours to items, I do that, creating a dark grey with a hint of blue, it needs a little sheen to it to match real thing, I alter gloss from 0 to 7 and my colour on the model goes extremely light, so much so that its of no use, so I choose 95% and still its far too light, its no longer dark grey with a hint of blue. Any use of Gloss slider at all and the colour goes vastly different.

I am either faced with a dead matt object or ...nothing, as any use of gloss slider totally changes the colour and is of no use, I just want a slight sheen as per shaded mode.

Why does this happen , surely glossing a colour shouldnt do this.

Also the light is a yellowy brown, no way of altering the colour temperature i.e. time of day from this strange sunrise colour. How do I remove this strange colour as its going to wreck any colour materials I am to apply.

Sun can be a soft sun or hard in reality, or we could have cloudy bright conditions which I would like, where are controls for cloudy bright ?

Make2D recent work

@GregArden wrote:

I have been constantly working on Make2d for the Rhino 6.0 WIP and believe we have made great advances from V5 and the product is ready for prime time.

Lately I have worked to improve the performance both in the large single polysurface case and the case of many objects. Most of this involved spreading the workload over multiple threads. I have also tweaked the progress reporting feedback that the command offers so the progress bar isn't stuck at 0% or 99% as often as before.

I know there are features that people would like to have that have not been added. I think the top of this list is getting a closed curve from the intersection with clipping planes. These closed curves can then optionally make occluding geometry so cut objects appear capped in Make2D. Also the 2D-closed regions could be made hatched.

However, first I want to know what the problems are with the existing features. So please give it a try and let me know.

Replicating "Explode Tree (Bang)" component in ghpython

@djordje wrote:

Hi @piac ,

I am trying to somewhat replicate the Grasshopper "Explode Tree (Bang)" component with ghpython component (0.6.0.3, Rhino 5 SR12 32 bit, Grasshopper 0.9.0076).
I am looking for the same functionality that "Explode Tree (Bang)" component has, but with a two slight differences:

  • The output parameters will be automatically created, instead of manual creation used by the "Explode Tree (Bang)" component (user needs to click on the "+" sign to create).

  • The component would only create output parameters, if _runIt input is set to True. Otherwise all output parameters will be deleted, except for the "output" one.

I have two issues:
1) After the outputs are removed, the following error message emerges:

Output parameter Index[i] too high or too low for Component Python Script

It is repeated for the number of output parameters - 1 times (because I am never removing the "output" parameter).

I am not sure if it is caused by the ghenv.Component.Params.Output.RemoveRange method on line 21.
So I tried to remove the output parameters one by one instead:

#ghenv.Component.Params.Output.RemoveRange(1, numberOfOutputs-1)
outputParamsIndices = range(1, ghenv.Component.Params.Output.Count)  # never include "output"
outputParamsIndices.reverse() # remove the parameters from the end
for index in outputParamsIndices:
    ghenv.Component.Params.UnregisterOutputParameter(ghenv.Component.Params.Output.Item[index])
    ghenv.Component.Params.OnParametersChanged()

But again the upper error message remained.
I can solve this by checking the "Do not show this message again" check box in the lower left corner. But still I would have to do this each time Rhino is restarted. It's a bit annoying.

2) Second issue is that, once output parameters are removed, the wires which connected those output parameters to the panels, remain glitchy. Here is an explanation in screenshots:

Component's _runIt input set to False:

Component's _runIt input set to True, and output parameters connected to panels manually:

Component's _runIt input set to False. The wires remain glitchy:

Btw. the inputData contains a tree with three branches
I would welcome any kind of help.
Component is attached below.

Thank you!

Make2D enhancement wrap up

@GregArden wrote:

For Rhino 6 I rewrote Make2D from scratch. The major goals were:

  1. A major speed up
  2. No more tiny segments
  3. Support for meshes.
  4. Hidden/Visible/Duplicate curves correctly classified.
  5. Scene silhouttes
  6. An enhanced dialog Interface
  7. An SDK interface to silhouette generation, hidden line drawing, and the Make2D command.

I think these goals have been met.

There are still a few bugs that I'm working on, but none that will likely get in your way.

Overall Make2D is greatly improved. Please give it a try and tell us what you think.
